Spaulding Square in Los Angeles is considered a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone So what does that mean to a potential buyer or seller? Prior to answering the question I would like to give a little background and history. Spaulding Square consists of mostly Single Family Homes built around the 1916 -1926. A real estate developer purchased the parcel of land between what we consider Orange Grove Ave on the west and Spaulding Ave on the east, the north boundary being Sunset Blvd and the South bounder being Fountain Ave. This developer than had the plot subdivided around 1914 and began building these modest one story homes around 1916. His name was Albert Starr Spaulding. He was a great marketer in a time when the entertainment industry was just beginning to flourish and up and coming stars started buying and settling into the neighborhood. Over the years it remained a magnet for movie industry technicians, musicians who were quietly living in this great pocket of Los Angeles. Buying a home in a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone has benefits as well as drawbacks. The benefit attract like minded home owners who want to preserve a part of Los Angeles History as well as rehabilitation tax credits and these benefits are reaped through the Mills Act to name one. Instead one has to follow the Historic Preservation Organization’s guide lines; hence it could be time consuming and costly to do repair, updates or any modifications. The Helmsman Statue is located in Marina Del Rey, CA at Burton Chace Park! The Helmsman is a statue which represented the Helms Bakery’s unfaltering delivery service for many years. Then on October 6th 1971 the Helms Family generously donated this 10+ foot Statue to Marina Del Rey, CA. For many years the Statue Stood in front of the Helms Bakery on Venice Blvd in Los Angeles, CA. It represented the Trademark of the Helms Bakery. Do you bake or boil your beets? I bake them for a deeper flavor If you are looking to add more flavors to your beet dishes my advice is clear and simple: you must bake them. By boiling them you will take just as long time wise, but the difference is most of the flavors will get boiled out. Next time you are planning on making a beet dish. Try using aluminum foil add a little olive oil and sea salt. Bake for about an hour or longer depending on size of the beets at 325 F. Let it cool so you can handle it and using paper towels remove the outer skin. This will guarantee your beets will be so much more flavorful than if you boiled them. I am very generous when it comes to using paper towels, if you are a bit more frugal get a plastic or rubber gloves and then use fewer paper towels to clean the beet’s outer skin . Once you are done depending what you are doing cut to the desired size. I was planning on making a Tuna Tartar with beets (another recipe to follow) hence the cubing on my part.
