Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon since 1966, now 2011 MDA Labor Day Telethon?! I have watched the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon since 1967 one year after it’s inception by a Comedian from the Rat Pack Days. Jerry Lewis single handedly made the Muscular Dystrophy Association a house hold name. ‘Jerry’s Kids’, we grew up watching every Labor Day Saturday to Sunday five pm hopeful and wishing that he would out do the previous year’s total. I remember when he broke the $1million mark as well as when he broke the $6million mark… than as MDA kept getting main stream, corporate sponsorships. Ed McMahon’s help and contributions from Seven Eleven Corporation sponsorship and on and on went the history of Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. Every Labor Day Sunday I remember the Parade Magazine’s cover page had “Jerry’s Kids” on it with a big spread. No matter how tight the budget was my parents have supported “the cause”. I remember having a conversation with my father that if every person just gave $1 Dollar there would be over $120million for Muscular Dystrophy Association.(that was the population count in those days for the USA) I also remember when Frank Sinatra appeared on the Show and when Dean Martin made up with Jerry Lewis on the Show. I also remember when he had a Heart Operation and still showed up for the show, because he believed in the cause. I also remember every comedian paying homage to the “king of comedy”. I also remember Jerry Lewis closing the show with his signature closing song “You’ll never walk alone”. So with that said I am disappointed at the Muscular Dystrophy Association for not thanking and treating the man who has helped collect $2.45 Billion since 1966 for MDA. It does not matter whether you like or dislike Jerry Lewis, the point is he Made MDA a lot of money over the past 44 years. They owe Jerry Lewis for making Labor Day & MDA a household name. They also owe Jerry Lewis a proper send off. Anyway that is my thought and I just happen to verbalize it, but who am I? Just a Beverly Hills Realtor who did not watch this year’s Telethon. New Developments: Fed Sues Big US Banks over Risky mortgages. Did you hear about it? According to the Associated Press the Federal Government submitted a number of lawsuits. Quietly under the radar the Government sued 17 financial firms which included many of the largest US Banks. The Lawsuits were filed this past Friday before the long Labor Day weekend, by the Federal Housing Finance Agency which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The 17 institutions affected by this lawsuit are in alphabetic order: Ally Financial Inc (formerly known as GMAC), Bank of America, Barclays Bank, Citigroup Inc, Countrywide Financial Corp, Credit Suisse Holdings Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, First Horizon National Corp., General Electric Co., Goldman Sachs & Co. and its financial unit First Franklin Financial Corp., Morgan Stanley, Nomura Holding America Inc., The Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Societe Generale. The government did not provide how much money they are asking in damages or what the dollar amount of the lawsuit consists of. Just for informational purposes the Fannie and Freddie securities that are affected by this are in the neighborhood of about $200 billion. Now I am wondering out loud, what will be accomplished? Will this help anyone outside of Law Firms defending these institutions? Will this be just a bunch of headlines? I am concerned that the repercussions will be that Lenders will tighten up Loans even more than they are doing NOW and potentially derail the fragile Real Estate market. Last time I was worried about the Fed’s Activities I thought they would tank the California & US Real Estate Market. It turned out they tanked the World’s Economy.I hope I am wrong. As some of you know our beloved Heidi went to Rainbow Bridge in the middle of May this year opening an opportunity for a new critter to come into our home. So yesterday afternoon we figured it would be the perfect time to make the introduction to Douggy & Jack, since it is a long weekend with relatively little on our schedule. (since we graciously declined a few Labor Day Cookout invitations) Overall it has been a major success. Jill decided she would rule the household. Jack accepted it quite well, just a little bit of sulking on his part. Douggy took it the hardest, the elder statesman now of the household and not being Top in the Pecking Order. Funny how Alpha personalities are not affected by Age or Size. If you are the Leader you will take over and if you are a follower you will follow (sometimes begrudgingly:) So with close supervision and a few glasses of wine Jill is now officially part of the household. Twenty years ago today portion sizes were a lot smaller than today in many of our favorite foods. I will only show you a few examples and you tell me what can we do to correct it? Bagels were 3 inches in Diameter 20 years ago and were 140 calories. Today they are 6 inches in diameter and are 350 calories. Fast Food hamburgers were 333 calories and now they are 590 calories. French Fries were 2.4 ounces and had 210 calories. now They are 6.9 ounces and have 610 calories How does this relate to Real Estate? Well let’s look at home sizes. Twenty years ago average living square feet were 1400 today it is closer to 2400 square feet. These happen to be on Santa Monica Boulevard in front of 10100 Avenue of the Stars. Near luxury condominiums from a price point of $400,000 to $20,000,000. I had about five of them marking my territory. Attorneys, Asset Managers and anyone who passed by saw them. I look back fondly at this pictures. My parents and my in-laws loved it. These were Bench Advertisements in Century City,CA. Did I get business? Nothing tangible, lot’s of calls from clients who knew me. Realtors who were looking for me they could conveniently reach out to me. Late night drunks, lonely women. Needless to say I look back fondly at this Marketing Moment.
