Tommy Trojan, the University of Southern California’s most recognized Statue! Near the centre of the USC campus is one of the most famous collegiate landmarks in the United States: Tommy Trojan. Since the unveiling of Tommy Trojan in 1930, the bronzed Trojan warrior has been the symbol of the university’s fighting spirit. The statue was sculpted by Roger Noble Burnham and it cost $10,000 to build; it was paid for by a Football ticket surcharge of $1. One year the cross town Rival UCLA prankster painted Tommy Trojan blue and gold (UCLA’s colors) (around 1941). Since then during the week of the annual USC-UCLA football game Tommy Trojan is guarded 24/7 to prevent another incident. This week is called “Troy Week” if you are a USC fan and “Beat SC Week” if you are a UCLA fan. His sword has been stolen so many times that now it is made out of wood. Did you know that Freddie Mac is offering incentives to buyers & buyer’s agents? I have read with great interest, that Freddie Mac is offering 3.5% closing cost assistance to buyers. At the same time they are offering $1200 bonus to the buyer’s agent who bring the offer on Home Steps properties. Conditions are you have to be in Escrow by July 31st and Escrow must close before September 30th. The purchaser must be an owner occupant, cannot be an investor buyer. This is what I call a great way to stimulate the buyers to get off the fence and buy a home. In light of the fact that lenders have tightened up the requirements this helps that cash strapped buyer who has great credit but no money. This is also a great way for Freddie Mac to reduce the large inventory of REO properties (bank owned properties). Hence this is a good move for the economy as well. Home ownership helps a myriad of ancillary business and the local Tax revenue will increase as well. Los Angeles: City Of Angels! Los Angeles has a population of approximately 3.8 million inhabitants. This figure alone makes it the second most populous city in the United States after New York City. The city is on almost 500 square miles of land which makes it the largest city based on land size in the United States. When you see these pictures of downtown, this is what you imagine from a large metropolis, a great downtown Skyline. Some of you who have been reading my Real Estate Blog over a period of time know that I have been featuring many different facets of this great city. Los Angeles was founded on September 4th, 1781 by the Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve. After the 1848 Mexican American war Los Angeles and California became part of the United States. Shortly thereafter on April 4th 1850 Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality. Hope you enjoyed the pictures and the small bit of information about this great city. read moreSouthern California’s Lemon varieties consist of: Lisbon, Eureka and Meyer Lemons
Southern California’s Lemon varieties consist of: Lisbon, Eureka and Meyer Lemons. Eureka Lemons make up the bulk of the lemon crops from California, Australia and Israel. They originally came from Sicily. More than likely this is what you will be buying in a Grocery Store. They have a small nipple on one end and are somewhat smaller compared to the other varieties. Lisbon lemons are medium in size, a bit elliptical to oblong and the skin is smoother not as ribbed as the Eureka and the nipple is more prominent. As the name implies they were introduced from Portugal. Both varieties came in the middle of the 1800’s. Eureka lemon was introduced around 1858 to California and the Lisbon lemon around 1849. The Meyer lemons are the best lemons to grow in Southern California due to the large size of the tree. They have originated from China and have been in California since 1908.They generally grows up to 20 feet high. Flavor wise I think they are the best because they are a bit sweeter than the other varieties. Their color is a richer orange-yellow compared to the two other varieties. We are so lucky to live in the greater Los Angeles area with such temperate climate that we can grow citrus in our back yard. So what kind of lemons do you grow in your back yard? Also which lemons do you prefer? Let me know. Red Wine that is noteworthy under $10 a bottle! This is only my second post about inexpensive good wines. I decided to write this post for one of my Active Rain Friends who drinks good inexpensive red wines. I thought she could add these two bottles to her repertories. For those of you who missed my previous post, here it is for your convenience (http://activerain.com/blogsview/1407763/being-frugal-in-back-in-fashion-now ). In today’s challenging economic times it is good to have a resource for inexpensive but good wine. So if you need one, feel free to reach out to me directly. The First one I will mention is the Montebuena (estate bottled) 2009 red wine from Spain under $9 dollars, by www.kysela.com importers. This is not your typical red wine from Spain; it is much deeper with a dark fig and plum palate. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it a 90 pointer, which is a very high rating for a wine like this, firmly structured with a smooth finish. I should have bought a case rather than just one bottle. Coto De Hayas Garnacha Centenaria 2009 red wines from Spain as well under $10 dollars a bottle. Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar rated it 88 points. I actually thought it was better than that. The grape production for this wine was limited to 5,500 vines, from three vineyards, which were planted over 100 years ago. The wine is aged for four months in American oak barrels, followed by a minimum of four months in bottles. The wine has great clarity and brightness with a deep ruby red color. The nose is potent blend of spices and ripe fruit. The palate is full, harmonious and smooth with good length. In the finish there is a return to the fruit and spice, which is first detected in the nose. These two bottles of wine I would be willing to put it in a blind taste testing against a lot of $25-$50 bottles and I am confident you would pick these two over them. The 2011 Festival of Books had a Legendary Chef: Thomas Keller at the Cooking Stage! Thomas Keller is not only a Chef’s Chef, he is someone who deserves awe and he is very inspirational. I went to see him because he created “The French Laundry” ( http://www.thefrenchlaundry.com ), Bouchon” (www.bouchonbistro.com) and “Per Se“(www.perseny.com) He is a perfectionist and he is a motivator, but mostly he is role model to look up to. He is a multiple James Beard award winning Chef. He is the only American Chef ever awarded the coveted Michelin three star rating simultaneously for two restaurants Per Se and The French Laundry. He gave me such inspiration and motivation by listening to him that I would have paid to hear him had I known what I was going to receive. The good news it was free. I will share one small sentence he passed on: The Challenge is to maintain passion for the everyday routine and endlessly repeated act, to derive deep gratification from the mundane. This sentence resonated with me how much cooking is similar to Real Estate. We do many mundane things over and over and the result of our efforts creates: happy Sellers and happy Buyers. How profound of an observation. I loved it. I was sad that the discussion ended.
