Tommy Trojan, the University of Southern California’s most recognized Statue!
Near the centre of the USC campus is one of the most famous collegiate landmarks in the United States: Tommy Trojan. Since the unveiling of Tommy Trojan in 1930, the bronzed Trojan warrior has been the symbol of the university’s fighting spirit.
The statue was sculpted by Roger Noble Burnham and it cost $10,000 to build; it was paid for by a Football ticket surcharge of $1. One year the cross town Rival UCLA prankster painted Tommy Trojan blue and gold (UCLA’s colors) (around 1941). Since then during the week of the annual USC-UCLA football game Tommy Trojan is guarded 24/7 to prevent another incident. This week is called “Troy Week” if you are a USC fan and “Beat SC Week” if you are a UCLA fan.
His sword has been stolen so many times that now it is made out of wood.
