As I reflect back on 25 years ago, albeit a few days late, I still remember clear as day the deadliest terrorist attack in American History. It was very early on the West Coast, hence we were still sleeping when the phone rang. It was a client/friend who simply said “turn on the TV” and we did, in confusion, horror and disbelief, along with the rest of the world.

This was the day dubbed “never forget”. Sadly, 25 years later, that is not a reality. In my mind, “never forget” means passing 9/11 onto generations. I blame political leaders, parents, teachers and the media for not placing enough focus on this tragic day. Why not an official national day of remembrance and honor? Instead, there are many blank faces on the younger generations when you mention 911. I personally find it very bothersome.

I recall working with a relocation client who was living two blocks from the Twin Towers. As you can imagine, I was extremely anxious when, understandably, I did not hear from them for about 4 days. When we finally did connect, I was both sad and elated at the same time to learn that they were fine. It adds another level when you personally know, or knew, someone that was that close or lost their lives on that day. The first few years following 911, there were memorial services that focused on those who survived and those who did not. As the years passed, the focus changed as well as the message. And there are many other ‘silent’ victims as well; the firefighters, police, New Yorkers living and/or working in the vicinity many of whom have serious health conditions that can only be traced to the events of 911.

When I lived in Boston, if friends visited from other countries I would always take them to New York for a couple of days and the World Trade Center observatory, Ellis Island and the Twin Towers were always on the list of ‘must sees’.  The Twin Towers were quite a backdrop for a photo op. Since 911 I haven’t l been back as I’d rather reflect on my memories of the New York skyline before this attack.  (It’s a bit similar to how I feel now driving along PCH after the Palisades Fire).

In closing, I cannot be clearer when I say Never Forget. Survivors and family and friends who lost loved ones are still suffering; they will never forget. We owe all of them and those who lost their lives at least this much. I leave you with a quote from Pope Leo XIV (previously known as Robert Provost): “I renew my prayers for those who lost their lives and for those who continue to bear the wounds of that tragic day.”
