The River we Remember

I finished this book in September (or August!) and here we are in October and I’m just getting to writing my book review.

The River we Remember

The River we Remember by William Kent Krueger

This was my first book by William Kent Krueger. I was persuaded by my bookworm partner to take a break from my typical reading genre (those that follow me and read my reviews know what books I usually read) and branch out and read an author new to me. So I thought, why not, particularly since I’ve gotten through a good number of books recently that have been lingering on my shelves.

With that said, all I can say is I am so glad Diane talked me into reading this book. Without giving too much away, I’ll begin by setting the scene. The story opens in 1958 in a small town called Jewell, in Minnesota where there was a murder of one of the town’s very well-known residents, Jimmy Quinn. Who killed Jimmy Quinn and why?

There are quite a few characters, young and old, that keep the pace of the story moving right along. Initially I found it distracting to have so many characters, but I soon realized that in a small town, we needed to get to know everyone in order to determine guilt from innocence. I found myself playing detective and trying to solve the crime as evidence and possible motives kept coming up. But more than a mystery, I was also quite intrigued by the characters overall.

The book was very well written, no surprise there. Although William Kent Krueger is new to me, he is a very well-known and esteemed author having won many prestigious book awards one being the Edgar Award for Best Novel of 2013 for Ordinary Grace.

I really fell into the nostalgia of the snapshot of life in a small town in late 1950’s America. It intrigued me to read about different points of views and different story lines which the author tied all together at the end. If you want to know who killed Jimmy Quinn and why you will need to pick this book up and give it a read.

Another great Novel by Kent Krueger

As you’ve probably guessed, William Kent Kruger has been added to my future “must reads” list. I’m happy to share that we do have a copy of Ordinary Grace on the shelves, and I plan to get to it very soon.
